Sione Tu'itahi is the Executive Director of the Health Promotion Forum of New Zealand Runanga Whakapiki Ake I Te Hauora o Aotearoa. An educator, author and public health professional, his areas of interest in health promotion include determinants of health, human rights, community development, public policy, and workforce development.

Sione joined the Forum in 2005 after six years as Pacific Manager at the Auckland Regional Public Health Service. He has also taught at a number of tertiary educational institutions. For more than ten years he led the building of Pacific capacity at Massey University. A former journalist and broadcaster, Sione is the author of a number of books, academic papers, and children’s stories. As a voluntary community worker, he is a member of the Pacific Peoples’ Advisory Panel to the Auckland City Council.

Helen brings 20 years of health promotion experience to her role as a Senior Health Promotion Strategist, portfolio Te Waipounamu-South Island. Originating from Murihiku-Invercargill she is now based in Waimea-Nelson. A former respiratory physiotherapist, she was a community advocate for the 1990 Smokefree Environments Act and in those days the tobacco growing industry in nearby Motueka provided a local focus for attention. She has since worked in a variety of roles and settings all with a consultative and community development focus. Her passions are workforce development and supporting health promotion mahi in the 'mainland' where she lives.

As our Business Manager Marg has been with the Forum for ten years. Starting in 1988 as the Administration and Accounts person, Marg has a background in secretarial, accounting and sales/advertsing management and came to the Forum to have a change of focus into the support of health promotion and training.

Dr Ieti Lima joined the Forum in 2009, looking after the Pacific portfolio on a part-time basis. Ieti is a researcher who has conducted research on a range of Pacific health issues over the last ten years.  Part of his role as Senior Health Promotion Strategist, Pacific portfolio, involves leading and facilitating some of the HPF's work, with an emphasis on activities which improve the health of Pacific peoples.

Te kotahi a Tuhoe ka kata te po.Trevor joined HPF in May 2010 to manage the Māori portfolio. He is married to Vanessa with two grown children and has worked in the health promotion field since 2006. Prior to this he worked in a number of vocations including Crown Land administration, Treaty Settlements and special youth projects. His interests are in raising the profile of Māori issues particularly in the areas of health and matters of social importance. Trevor is committed to health promotion as a fundamental approach to improving Māori health status and believes that strong Māori leadership in this field is an essential facet if we are to contemplate success.

Trevor Simpson - White Ribbon Ambassador.
Ruben Wiki was the first White Ribbon Ambassador.
There are now some 20 Ambassadors including the Prime Minister.
White Ribbon Ambassadors are chosen for:

  • their support for the principles of the campaign.
  • their willingness to challenge the behaviour of abusive men.
  • their willingness to encourage others to do the same.
  • their commitment to conveying the messages of the White Ribbon Campaign to other men within their community.

 

Emma Frost – (Te Rarawa, Ngati Kuri)
Emma is our newly appointed Office Administrator. She brings with her a wide mix of administrative, project management, community development and governance skills. Emma has applied her international, national and more recently her community experiences in supporting Maori aspirations with particular emphasis on social justice issues and education. Her previous role involving improved health and wellbeing provides a natural fit to the work of the Health Promotion Forum of New Zealand and carries forward her interest in social determinants of health. With various voluntary roles on the Ranui branch of the Mari Women’s Welfare League, her local marae and, until recently, the Alternatives to Violence Project Aotearoa Emma continues an active role in furthering her ambitions for a fair and equitable society.

 

Barbara Smith
On a part-time basis, Barbara has joined our HPF team recently, primarily as support person to the Business Manager, Margaret Morrison.  Barbara brings her flexibility and strong skills in administration and clerical systems to this role.  She has a wide interest in health, particularly from  a nutritional point of view, and is passionate about organic food sources and gardening.  She is pleased to be with an organisation promoting health in the wider community.
