Webishop to discuss effective leadership and Pacific wellbeing

Our Pacific Health Promotion webishop, featuring a panel of Pacific leaders in public health and health promotion, will  be held on June 5 from 11am to 12.30pm.

We invite you to come and join us at the webishop - ‘Tufunga Fonua Ola - How effective Pacific leadership ensures Pacific wellbeing in times of great challenges’ – and hear from, as well as interact, with our awesome panel!

We are thrilled to announce two of our three guest speakers: Sir Collin Tukuitonga, a Public Health Medicine Specialist who is currently Associate Dean Pacific at the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and Dr Josephine Aumea Herman, Chief Clinical Advisor Pacific Health at Manatū Hauora New Zealand Ministry of Health.  

Effective leadership in public health and health promotion is urgently needed. Pacific peoples in Aotearoa are living in times of  global and national challenges that impact on their health and wellbeing.

Geo-politics and obsolete economic systems that cause crises, environmental catastrophes, and health challenges such as NCDs and pandemics, are causing increasing deprivations to all, Pacific peoples included.

Drawing on the experience of these Pacific leaders in public health and health promotion, this webishop will explore how good governance and leadership can set and navigate strategic pathways that enable Pacific communities and others to walk a pathway of wellbeing, and take greater control of their future.  

The aim is to inspire and empower the Pacific public health and health promotion workforce to lead by serving their communities with confidence, care and compassion during these challenging times.

More about the guest speakers:

Sir Collin Tukuitonga is a Niuean Public Health Medicine Specialist, currently Associate Dean Pacific at the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Co-director for the University of Auckland Research Centre for Pacific and Global Health (Te Poutoko Ora a Kiwa) and Associate Professor of Public Health.  

Sir Collin has held several highly influential offices, including Director General of the Pacific Community (SPC), Commissioner and Co-ordinator for WHO Geneva, Chief Executive of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs and Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health.

He was instrumental in establishing Pacific Language weeks as an Aotearoa New Zealand government initiative, and in his home of Niue, he established the biannual Niue Culture and Arts Festival.

He is also currently the President of the NZ College of Public Health Medicine.

Dr Aumea Herman is of Cook Islands descent, a public health physician, epidemiologist and GP, and the Chief Clinical Advisor Pacific Health at Manatū Hauora New Zealand Ministry of Health. She is the former Director of Pacific Health at Waitematā District Health Board and prior to this was Secretary for Te Marae Ora Cook Islands Ministry of Health as well as a Medical Officer of Health at the Auckland regional Health Service.

She is a past recipient of the Pasifika Medical Association Service Award for her contribution to Pacific Health and was a Medical Officer of Health with Auckland Regional Public Health Service from 2017 to 2018, where she helped lead the response to the wider region’s mumps outbreak. As Secretary for Te Marae Ora, she helped lead the national emergency health response to Covid-19. The Cook Islands is one of a select few countries that have not reported a single Covid-19 case.
